"It was by far the best part
of my BSc time. I have
never before learned so

and I would have never
believed that living in one
big house with 15
international students
would be that much fun.
We all have grown to be
a family, there will be
reunions and future

fieldwork

coordinator training

"Learning is an experience. Everything else is just information"
                                                                                              Albert Einstein

This interdisziplinary training course in Aljezur enables university staff to plan, manage and innovate field work and off-site activities in a variety of environments. Leading scientists from 12 FIELD project partner universities and experts from the British Ecological Society and The Data Place provide inspiration and practical advice for planning and implementing successful field courses. The workshop will help teaching and non-teaching staff to gain (and share) innovative ideas, forge new professional contacts and to promote the values of field work within their institution. The course aids organisations to fulfil Health & Safety obligations for off-site visits, including journeys abroad.

topics covered

The course is thematic and multidisciplinary with input from the academic fields of biology, geology, geography, environmental and social sciences.  Short, contextualised presentations provide a theoretical framework, initiate lively discussions and underpin practical activities in the field. Interactivity is key. Participants are invited to report their own experiences and share their opinion and know-how with like-minded people in a relaxed and informal environment.

prerequisites

The most import prerequisite is an enthusiasm for field work and experiential learning. The course is equally suited for early career academics who have not lead an off-site activity before and experienced colleagues who offer to share their knowledge to keep field courses firmly on the agenda of HE teaching. PhD students, technicians and admin staff are specifically invited to participate and to contribute.

A significant component of the course syllabus will take place outdoors in the beautiful environment of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina.  Attendees will receive by email before their arrival: documents with general aims of the course, a pre-course questionnaire about dietary requirements and detailed travel information (we will provide the sun cream).

post training

Participants will receive a Certificate of Participation for their Continuous Professional Development portfolio (CPD) and access to the FIELD network and exercise database.

The training provider will publish online resources to share ideas, experiences and materials from workshop participants to encourage peer networking and to develop and enhance the learning experience of students on field courses.
